Why Supplement Quality Matters

Unlike pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements do not require FDA pre-market approval before they hit shelves. That means the responsibility for quality falls entirely on the manufacturer. Some companies take that responsibility seriously. Many do not.

The dietary supplement industry is governed by 21 CFR Part 111 -- the FDA regulation that sets current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards for supplement production. These regulations require identity testing, batch documentation, contamination screening, and trained personnel. But enforcement depends on inspection, and not every facility is inspected with the same frequency or rigor.

That is exactly why independent, third-party testing exists. Third-party labs have no financial stake in the supplement company they are testing for. They provide unbiased verification that what is on the label is actually in the product -- and that nothing harmful came along for the ride.

At Mortals, we do not just meet the baseline. We test every batch three separate times through independent laboratories, we manufacture exclusively in FDA-registered facilities in the United States, and we disclose every ingredient by name along with our total blend doses. Because if a company is not willing to show their work, you should ask why.

100% USA-Made: From Formulation to Your Door

Our entire supply chain is domestic. Three facilities. Three states. Complete traceability from raw ingredient to finished product.

01

Formulated in Oregon

Every Mortals formula is developed using clinical research and manufactured in an FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facility. Our formulation team works with supplement scientists to select ingredients backed by peer-reviewed studies, then combines them at doses designed to actually work -- not trace amounts added for label appeal. Every ingredient undergoes identity testing to confirm it is exactly what the label says it is.

02

Packaged in California

After formulation, products move to our California packaging facility -- also FDA-registered and cGMP-certified. Here, each batch is precision-filled into single-serve sachets under controlled conditions. Packaging integrity is verified and additional testing is conducted to screen for any environmental contamination introduced during the packaging process.

03

Fulfilled from Idaho

Our Idaho fulfillment center handles final quality control and shipping. Before any order leaves the facility, packaging integrity, label accuracy, and product consistency are verified. Every batch carries a lot number that traces back through every stage of production, so we can track exactly where each ingredient came from and when it was tested.

Why USA manufacturing matters: Domestic facilities are subject to unannounced FDA inspections -- international facilities receive advance notice. Shorter supply chains mean better traceability, faster response times for quality issues, and no language barriers or time zone complications with our manufacturing partners. When something needs to be fixed, it gets fixed fast.

Triple Third-Party Testing

Every Mortals supplement is independently tested at three separate stages of production. No conflicts of interest. No self-grading. Just unbiased, third-party verification.

01

Raw Material Testing

Before any ingredient enters our formula, independent labs verify its identity, purity, and potency. Labs use techniques like HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to confirm each ingredient is exactly what it claims to be. If a supplier's documentation does not match the lab's findings, that ingredient is rejected.

Tests include: ingredient identity confirmation, potency verification, heavy metal screening (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium via ICP-MS), and microbial contamination checks.
02

In-Process Testing

During manufacturing, samples are pulled and tested to ensure the formula is being produced consistently and accurately. This stage monitors blend uniformity, confirms that ingredients are present at the correct ratios, and screens for contamination that could be introduced during production. Every batch has a complete production record documenting actual execution.

Governed by: 21 CFR Part 111, Subparts E and F -- Production & Process Controls and Quality Control Operations.
03

Finished Product Testing

After production and packaging are complete, the final product is sent to an independent, accredited third-party laboratory. They verify that the finished supplement matches the label claims for potency and ingredient content, and they run a full contaminant panel including heavy metals, microbial pathogens (E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus), yeast, mold, and pesticide residues.

Microbial limits follow USP standards: TAMC below 100,000 CFU/g, TYMC below 10,000 CFU/g, and zero detection of specified pathogens.

The Receipts: Certificates of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is an official document issued by a testing laboratory that reports the results of every test performed on a specific batch of product. Think of it as a report card for each production run. It tells you whether the product passed or failed every quality and safety check.

Every single batch of Mortals supplements has a COA on file. We believe that if a brand cannot produce a COA for the product they are selling you, that is a red flag. A COA is the only independent proof that a supplement contains what the label claims, in the amounts stated, without harmful contaminants.

What a COA Includes

  • Product identification: product name, batch/lot number, manufacture date, expiration date
  • Active ingredient identity confirmation using validated analytical methods
  • Potency and assay results verifying label-claimed dosages
  • Heavy metals results: lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium levels
  • Microbial results: total aerobic count, yeast and mold count, pathogen absence testing
  • Testing methods used for each analysis (HPLC, ICP-MS, FTIR, ELISA)
  • Clear pass/fail determination for every test against predetermined specifications
  • Authorized signature from qualified laboratory personnel

Certified Clean

FDA-Registered Facility

Our manufacturing facilities are registered with the FDA and subject to unannounced inspections. FDA registration means the facility meets federal requirements for supplement production and is held accountable through regular oversight.

cGMP Certified

Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) under 21 CFR Part 111 are legally required for all supplement manufacturers. Our facilities go beyond the baseline with written SOPs for every process, calibrated equipment, trained personnel, and complete batch documentation.

Triple Third-Party Tested

Three independent testing checkpoints -- raw materials, in-process, and finished product -- performed by accredited third-party laboratories with no financial stake in our company. Every batch. Every time.

100% Vegan

All Mortals products are free of animal products, animal by-products, and animal derivatives. Our capsules use plant-based HPMC instead of animal-derived gelatin. No animal-derived excipients, coatings, or processing aids.

Non-GMO

Our ingredients have not been genetically engineered. Independent evaluation and laboratory testing verify that GMO genes and proteins are either not detected or below established thresholds in our raw materials and finished products.

Gluten-Free

Mortals products contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten -- the FDA-established threshold verified through ELISA-based analytical testing. Safe for individuals with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

How to Read a Supplement Label

Most people have never been taught how to evaluate a supplement label. Here is what to look for and what to watch out for.

01

Serving Size

The serving size tells you how much product constitutes one dose. All ingredient amounts listed on the panel are per this serving size. For Mortals, the serving size is clearly stated on every pouch -- one sachet equals one full serving. No measuring, no guessing.

02

Active Ingredients and Amounts

This is where you find out what is actually in the product and how much of each ingredient per serving. Look for specific milligram (mg) amounts next to each ingredient. If you see a "dagger" symbol (†) next to the % Daily Value, it means no Daily Value has been established for that ingredient -- which is common for herbal extracts and botanicals.

03

Other Ingredients

Listed below the Supplement Facts panel, "Other Ingredients" includes everything that is not an active ingredient: capsule material, flow agents, fillers, binders, coatings, and preservatives. Fewer other ingredients generally indicates a cleaner product. Mortals keeps this list short -- no artificial colors, no synthetic fillers, no unnecessary additives.

04

Red Flags to Watch For

Be cautious of labels that hide behind vague terms like "herbal complex" without listing what ingredients are actually in it, show a blend total with no ingredient names at all, include long lists of artificial additives, or make health claims that sound too specific (like "cures" or "treats" -- legitimate supplements use language like "helps support" or "designed to"). The key question is: can you see exactly which ingredients are in the product?

How Mortals Does Transparency Differently

Mortals uses a proprietary blend with full ingredient transparency. What does that mean? We list every single ingredient by name on the label, and we disclose the total blend dose for each product. The specific amount of each individual ingredient within the blend is proprietary -- that is our formulation IP -- but you will never see a mystery ingredient or a hidden total dose.

This approach gives you real information to make an informed decision. You know exactly which ingredients are in the product, and you know the total dose you are getting in each serving. Compare that to brands that list "Proprietary Blend: 500mg" with no ingredient names and no way to verify what you are actually taking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Supplement Safety

Yes. Every Mortals supplement undergoes three independent rounds of third-party testing: raw material testing before ingredients enter the formula, in-process testing during manufacturing, and finished product testing after production is complete. These tests are performed by accredited, independent laboratories with no financial relationship to Mortals. Each batch receives a Certificate of Analysis (COA) documenting the results.

cGMP stands for current Good Manufacturing Practices, governed by 21 CFR Part 111. These are FDA regulations that all dietary supplement manufacturers are legally required to follow. cGMP requirements include trained personnel, written standard operating procedures, equipment calibration and maintenance, identity testing of every dietary ingredient, complete batch records, and formal complaint handling. Mortals manufactures exclusively in cGMP-compliant, FDA-registered facilities.

No dietary supplement is "FDA approved" — that term applies to pharmaceutical drugs, not supplements. However, Mortals products are manufactured in FDA-registered facilities that are subject to unannounced FDA inspections and must comply with all federal cGMP regulations under 21 CFR Part 111. This is the highest level of regulatory oversight available for dietary supplements in the United States.

All Mortals supplements are manufactured entirely in the United States. Our products are formulated in Oregon, packaged in California, and shipped from Idaho. All three facilities are FDA-registered and cGMP-compliant. We chose domestic manufacturing for stronger regulatory oversight, better supply chain traceability, and faster quality response times.

Yes. Every batch of Mortals supplements has a COA on file. You can request your batch's Certificate of Analysis by emailing hello@trymortals.com or support@trymortals.com with your order number or the lot number printed on your product packaging. We will send you the corresponding lab report.

Clinical dosing means using ingredients at the dosage levels studied in published clinical research. Rather than including trace amounts of many ingredients for label appeal — a practice known as "pixie dusting" — Mortals formulates with doses that align with the amounts shown to be effective in scientific studies. Our total blend doses range from 1,250mg to 2,560mg per serving depending on the product, with every ingredient listed by name.

Single-serve sachets solve several problems. They eliminate the guesswork of measuring or counting pills from a bottle. They are portable — you can carry them in a pocket or bag and take them when you need them. They also reduce the risk of contamination from repeatedly opening the same container, and they help ensure you are getting a consistent, accurate dose every time.

Yes. All Mortals products are 100% vegan (no animal products, by-products, or derivatives — including plant-based HPMC capsules instead of gelatin), non-GMO verified, and gluten-free (containing less than 20 ppm of gluten per FDA standards). Our formulas contain no artificial sweeteners, no added sugars, no synthetic fillers, and no FD&C dyes.

Look for these indicators: the product is manufactured in an FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facility; the brand can produce Certificates of Analysis from independent third-party labs; the label clearly lists every ingredient by name and shows the total blend dose; the company discloses where the product is manufactured; and the brand avoids making claims that supplements can "cure," "treat," or "prevent" disease (which would violate FDA regulations). If a company cannot answer basic questions about their testing and manufacturing, consider that a warning sign.

We always recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before taking any dietary supplement, especially if you are currently taking prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a pre-existing medical condition. While our products are made with well-researched natural ingredients, individual interactions can vary. Your doctor can review the full ingredient list (available on each product page) and advise you based on your specific situation.
